What You Should Consider About Insurance for Teenagers

There is no moment that is more exciting in any person’s life that when they get their driver’s license and are allowed to drive their own, or the family’s, car. The thrill of driving down the road and being the envy of many friends as well as causally offering to pick someone up will never again be matched at any period of one’s life. When this period comes to the life of your child you need to consider insurance for teenagers.

The type of insurance teenagers require demands careful consideration. Adding them to your own insurance policy is, as a rule, much less expensive than getting a separate policy for them. However, you must understand that your insurance premium will be increased on every vehicle you own. Many companies offer discounts for such things as good grades and driver’s training when insuring teenagers.

Laws regarding teenage drivers vary from state-to-state. For example, in Connecticut sixteen to seventeen year olds with a driver’s license cannot drive between the hours of 11 PM and 5 AM, except for employment and other special occasions, all people in the car must wear seat belts and they may not use any mobile electronic device, including cell phones, while driving.

In Georgia, to get a learners permit the applicant must be 15 years old, must present a certificate of attendance from the applicant’s school, a GED diploma, a high school diploma, or proof of college enrollment. They cannot obtain a permit or license if they have withdrawn from school, have 10 unexcused absences, or have any infractions. If they get a citation after getting the license, it will be suspended immediately.

All of the above laws are for the protection of the teenager and are figured into the cost of the insurance you must obtain for them. If your record shows that you have a good insurance record it will often result in better quotes when you add the teenager. However, it is always in your best interest to ask for quotes from other companies to make a comparison.

Teenagers have a very high rate of automobile accidents. This is often because they do not have enough experience or become careless when driving. Unfortunately, these accidents show up on all the statistics which increases the amount of the premium with all insurance companies.

There are companies that offer inexpensive policies for teenagers only. These, however, should be carefully investigated to make sure that all contingencies are covered. Things such as what is enough liability insurance, is it high enough to cover a number of people if there is a serious accident, who is responsible if the insurance doesn’t cover the damages and like questions should be asked when considering insurance for teenagers.
